about
His name was John. He came in to the cafe I worked at and ordered a doppio macchiato. We talked about superhero movies and his niece. Once, I accidentally locked him in the storage unit while he was smoking weed. He called the store, starting to panic. He worked at the movie theater and liked to climb trees.
One Saturday morning I opened and looked out on the patio and John was lying there. I remember hearing myself "Please no" as I took in his blue lips and the blood trickling from his ear. The shape of his form on the ground. Later I learned that that he had been alive when I was sitting there next to him waiting for the ambulance to arrive.
He'd been climbing the big tree on the back patio and fell. It had been a full moon the night before and the police found photos of the moon in his phone.
